What To Buy?

We need to buy a new computer, and can't decide what to buy. Both the Mac and PC have perks and drawbacks.

PC- Can get more bang for your buck and if it breaks you can get it repaired fairly cheap. However, the Windows operating system sucks and most viruses/spyware/malware are written for Windows. The more stable PC operating systems don't run the software I use.

Mac- Operating system is more stable and less prone to attacks by viruses/spyware/malware. Hardware and software always work together well because they are made by the same company. More multimedia software come pre-installed. However, just comparing hardware (RAM, Memory, etc), Mac is more expensive than a comparable PC. Also, becasue very few people can fix a Mac, it is very expensive to have it fixed.

Just wondering what you guys all thought. I love my Mac, but I think I have a bit of a sour taste in my mouth because we have had the hard-drive crash and now the screen is going out and it's only 3 1/2 years old. On the other hand, my parents have always had a PC and have had nothing but problems.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Andrew is a computer programmer/repair guy and knows a ton about computers, and he would never buy a Mac. That's all I know, cause when he starts talking "computer" I often zone out. If you want a more detailed answer I can have him leave a comment on here.

I think you know where our opinion lies. Colby would take a bullet for Macs. And now that I have inherited his old one, I'm also becoming a lover of Macs as well. It's funny though cause your post reminds me of that commercial that's on TV right now where the girl is going to the store looking at computers and she talks about the pros and cons of Mac and then picks the PC because of random things she says. You bring out good points for both though. Good luck.

I have gone through 2 PC's while Andy's Mac is still working great and I have learned to love it! I will never own a pc again! Enough said.

Paul wrote this for you last night. Hope you can understand his late night ramblings. I had Paul answer your question since I have no opinion. :-)

"I feel this is a tough question to ask. Both a PC and a Mac use mostly the same parts. You can change out and replace most the parts in a PC with a Mac except for a few small things. I have worked on and repaired both types. I personally do not see why it would cost more to fix a mac when the only bug difference is the operating system. If your mac is an iMac then yes it might be hard to get that one fixed as it has more special parts. If your Mac was a laptop then the parts are not all the special. They use normal hard drives that a PC uses.

Mac's do have fewer viruses so that is a plus. But you are right in that they cost more. Some people refer to this as the "Mac Tax" There is a lot of debate as to whether Apple actually raises the price on purpose or not. But if you like the Mac operating system I would stick with it. I feel changing to a windows PC may just frustrate you more as it will not work as you feel it should. Mac computers tend to last longer (Not in your case) and tend to work better because Apple controls all the hardware and the software (not as much on the software now) that goes into them. PC's do not have much regulation in this matter and can become more unstable due to this.

I am concerned you have had so many issues with your mac because I have not heard of anyone having one die so soon. Most Macs last for a good long time.

My opinion is this, and its just my opinion mixed in with a lot of computer repair experience. I like the Macs. I like the Mac operating system and I like how the operating system was created. I do feel they are a better product and I do feel you pay for what you get. So sometimes paying more for something better is not a bad idea. Being said I do not own a Mac, I cannot afford one. I normally get PC's but I do not run Windows on them as I find Windows does not do what I need it to do my way. I think you would be happier with a Mac. But thats just my opinion. Or mostly my ramblings at 1:30 in the morning."

That's a tough one Nic, Matt takes care of our computer stuff so I don't really have an opinion. I can't believe that yours went out that fast though, that's horrible. Good luck getting a new one!
